In the age of big data, the importance of thick data is being reassessed. As mentioned above, big data can answer who, what, and when, but not why. Therefore, the knowledge of experts and stakeholders is expected to provide thick data that responds to why. You can treat thick data as the hypothesis that supports the measurement optimization proposed in Sect. 4.2.3.

There are many frameworks and methodologies for gathering the opinions of experts or stakeholders. Most of them try to collect solutions to the problem directly. This book also deals with them in the following chapters. The suggestions here have a different purpose. That is, gather hypotheses from experts and stakeholders to explain what is happening now. Equally or even more important than developing a measurement optimization framework is developing a hypothesis collection framework for organizing various views on the data.

We are entering an age of increasingly flooded data. Analyzing the data that happens to be obtained does not always lead to correct behavior. Collect data based on appropriate hypotheses to construct the knowledge you are looking for.
